AC Milan are in the market looking for a winger. “This player would allow Suso and Bonaventura to get some rest occasionally.” said Adriano Galliani to RAI Sport, ahead of Milan’s Coppa Italia clash with Torino. While Marco Fassone and Massimo Mirabelli scout Europe, preparing a wish-list of transfers for next season, Galliani is working towards plugging relevant gaps in the current squad.
The player identified to help Milan in their push towards European qualification is Everton’s Gerard Deulofeu. The Spaniard was widely regarded as among the brightest talents in the game a few years ago. However, erratic performances and coaching changes at Goodison Park have stalled his progress.
A right-footed winger by nature, Deulofeu can play on either flank. He is also capable of playing in a more central position. The 22-year old enjoys having the ball at his feet, running at defenders and breaking into space with sudden acceleration. He has a keen eye for a sharp pass and can be incisive in tight spaces or on the counter. In many ways, Deulofeu would mirror Suso’s style at Milan, which is perhaps necessary.
If played on the left, Deulofeu can cut onto his right foot as an inverted winger, or run along the byline, stretching the fullback. He is more creative than Bonaventura and offers more bite than Niang. When played on the right, he would assume playmaking duties from Suso, creating chances in the final third.
Suso and Bonaventura have played nearly every game this season. They are also among the three best players at the club (based on form). The importance to rest these players cannot be understated, and it’s reassuring to know that the management is trying to protect these players from burning out. Deulofeu would provide much-needed relief to Suso and Bonaventura. Under the given circumstances, Deulofeu would be a welcome addition at the club.
The management will have six months to evaluate Deulofeu, assuming he arrives on a loan deal. With prominent names like Federico Bernardeschi and Keita Balde being targeted for 2017/18, Deulofeu will have much to prove to the men in suits. Nonetheless, he will immediately assist (pun intended) in furthering Milan’s movement up the table and back into the Champions League.
